GEN II have recently launched their Women in Engineering Campaign designed specifically to encourage more females into engineering careers.
Over the past 10 years we have trained some fantastic female engineers in careers such as Electrical Engineering, Mehcanical Engineering, Process, Nuclear Worker and Scientific who have gone on to have really successful careers.
Here is one of the bill boards used:
Here is a short interview with Charli Christian one of our ladies who took part in our Women in Engineering Campaign:
Name: Charli Christian
Age: 18
Apprenticeship: Electrical Engineering
So why did you become an apprentice at GEN II?
"I applied for an apprenticeship at GEN II because I really wanted to become an electrician. My dad is an electrician and as I was growing up I used to help him - I guess you could say it runs in the family.
I got a lot of support from my family and friends when I said that I wanted to become an electrician. Some of my friends who have started training in more traditional jobs like hairdressing and childcare did think it was a bit strange but they think it's good now. Everyone is really friendly at GEN II and we all help each other. I am on the course with other female electricians and we are all really enjoying it."
So what would you say to other females who are thinking about a career in engineering?
"Do it! It's really good, especially the practical work and you get paid while you are learning. People are really surprised when I tell them I'm a trainee electrician but they think it's really cool!"
So what do you want to do in the future?
"I hope that when I have finished my training at GEN II I will be able to go on to do a HNC or maybe even a degree, but I think I will always be involved in electrical engineering."
