ECITB Announces National Apprentice of the Year – Local apprentice comes out top

Jeremy Hall, a Babcock International apprentice, has been named as the National Apprentice of the Year at the Engineering Construction Industry Training & Development Awards, held on Thursday 25 April.

Jeremy, who recently completed an apprenticeship in Mechanical Maintenance, now works at Dungeness B Power Station. He prevailed over 250 apprentices who were eligible for the award to become Regional Apprentice of the Year, South East & East. He then went on to be nominated for the National Apprentice of the Year Award, sponsored by GEN II Training.

“Receiving the news that I had been selected for the regional award was amazing in its self and gave me a real sense of achievement but to receive the national apprentice of the year award as well, was just unbelievable. It’s something that I honestly couldn’t have pictured happening a few years ago and has left me on a real high!” said the winner.

Jeremy was nominated for the award by his employer Babcock International. “Having such an inspirational apprentice and now technician on our workforce has been of great benefit to Babcock, not just because of the benefits his skills bring to the implementation of our projects but to the benefits individuals such as he have on our company profile,” said William Mckie, Babcock International.

Mike Smith, Chief Executive of GEN II said: “GEN II was delighted to be able to sponsor this year’s ECITB Apprentice of the Year Award. As one of the ECITB’s partners and an outstanding provider of apprentice training, we feel passionate about recognising not only the achievement of young people in meeting the demands of their apprenticeship, but also the vital contribution they make to their employer’s business. By supporting apprenticeships employers are ensuring that the industry continues to recruit the talented and skilled craftsmen, craftswomen and technicians it requires to meet the industries future skills needs. There is no better way in my view of demonstrating this recognition, than through the ECITB annual awards.”

The Training & Development Awards celebrate the commitment to and achievements in training and development for individuals, companies and training providers in the engineering construction industry. They are hosted by the Engineering Construction Industry Training Board (ECITB) whose overall responsibility is to attract, develop and qualify a workforce fit for the demands of the industry.

Martin Eatough, UK Commercial & Apprentice Programmes Manager said: “It’s important that we recognise the achievements of these young, talented engineering professionals of the future. To win the National Apprentice of the Year is a great accomplishment and Jeremy should feel very proud. He is a fine example of what hard work and dedication can achieve.”

ECITB Apprenticeships are a proven, successful route into the engineering construction industry. Apprenticeships are available in 14 different disciplines: – Design & Draughting; Electrical Maintenance Instrumentation & Control Maintenance; Electrical Installation; Mechanical Maintenance; Mechanical Fitting; Instrument Pipefitting (Small Bore Tubing); Non Destructive Testing; Plating; Pipefitting; Steel Erecting; Project Control; Welding; and Moving Loads.

The apprenticeships, lasting between three and four years are developed in conjunction with industry employers to ensure both the delivery of skills that are required by the industry and definite career prospects for the apprentice.
