Radiation Safety Practice - City and Guilds 7410
Aims
This course is designed to provide a qualification for supporting people who wish to gain employment or are currently employed in the area of radiological protection. The Radiation Safety
Practice Stage 1 (RSP 1) qualification is recognised within the nuclear industry as providing the suitable educational background for radiation protection advisers and monitors.
The practical theme and case studies that runs throughout the course enables the student to effectively use standard instruments and equipment.
Course Target Group
Any personnel who require an understanding of radiation safety.
Objectives
This course is a mixture of on-line and practical study which will prepare delegates for the radiation safety practice written examination. By the end of the course the participants will understand:
• Structure of Matter
• Radioactivity and Radiation
• The Detection of Ionising Radiation
• The Biological Effects of Ionising Radiation
• Legislation and Regulation
• External and Internal Radiation Hazards
• Nuclear Fission and Reactor Systems
• The Treatment of Radioactive Waste Material.
Delivery of the Course
The course has a theoretical element and a substantial practical element. The underpinning theory will be delivered through webbased techniques and each student will have access to learning materials through the internet supported by a course handbook.
There are 12 topics delivered. At the end of each topic there will be an informal on-line assessment which will enable the course tutor to provide feedback on the student’s progress. In addition
to this feedback the student’s will be supported through email and tutorial sessions held with a local tutor.
The student’s will undertake 10 practical experiments throughout the course and these will be based in the Nucleonics laboratory at GEN II’s training complex. Each experiment will provide a
practical experience of theory studied in the various topics. There will be a requirement for each student to complete a log book of the practical experiments and this will form part of the course assessment.
Assessment
The course will be assessed through a log book of practical experiments and a final examination at the end of the programme.
Support Provided
The theoretical elements of the course will be delivered through the internet with detailed notes, demonstrations and self assessments. These will be supported with online tutorials, online feedback of assessments and email/telephone contacts. Alongside the internet support a local tutor will be on hand to help with studies, and these tutorials will be based at the GEN II Curriculum and Education Department.
Expected Student Activities & Attendance
The commitment a student would be expected to undertake on an average week is given below:
- Online study 4 Hours per week
- Weekly Tutorial (Local) 1 Hour per week
